Oaths

I said I would ride to work and I have been for a week now.  I love it!  I prefer it.  To me, an oath can be defined simply.  It is saying that you’re going to do something.  I said I was going to ride my bike to work and I have.  3 thoughts:

  1. Biking to work allows me to connect with the city in a way my car prevented.
  2. The sights, sounds and smells bring me to life each morning.
  3. It takes me 30 extra minutes to get to work, but its contant movement… no parking on freeways!

Plans

My friend taught me this saying from the marines about planning.  Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance, the 7 P’s of planning.  One of the skills I need besides all of the training skills is planning skills.

  1. One of the most powerful machines in the world, the locomotive, is powerless of the tracks.
  2. Not planning is like giving my time away.
  3. Planning will greatly improve my productivity.

“Spontaneity is fun, but its not spontaneous if you never have any plans.”

Sixteen

I googled the bike route from my home in Altadena, CA to my work in South Los Angeles. It is 23 miles. I drove the route this morning through South Pasadena, Highland Park, North Los Angeles, Downtown LA and finally South Central because I am planning to ride my bike to work tomorrow. As I was driving, I was assessing the safety, lighting, traffic, etc. I went back and forth in my mind. I shouldn’t do it. I should do it. When I arrived at my computer, I read a story about 16 year old Abby Sunderland. She’s at sea aspiring to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the planet by boat. This is a quote from the story:  Read more…

Austin

I spent the weekend with the CNN production team, Sanjay Gupta and Lance Armstrong in Austin.  I’m originally from TX, but had never spent much time in Austin.  Its a great city.  Other than the training I had a great time!  Ha ha just joking.  Check out the picture with Lance Armstrong.  We did a 10 mile ride together.  He beat me.  The real highlight was spending a week with my brother, Brent, his wife Diana, my two amazing nieces Eleanor and Betty and my nephew Bruuuuuuce!  Read more…

Repitition

Again and again and again creates results. I’m all for quick results. I have not seen results as quickly as I would like in my journey so far. I’ve wanted to lose more weight, gain more endurance, get faster, but it has gone slower. In the past I might have just given up from frustration. Now its different. I know that today I’m going to do something toward my goal. Tomorrow I’m going to do something else. The same thing is true for the next day and the next. 3 thoughts about repititon.

1. Consistency leads further than I usually think.
2. Steady deliberation produces lasting results.
3. Repitition builds physical muscles, but also spiritual and mental muscles.

“Doing something everyday matters.”

Edge

I sometimes wonder how my life would change if I lived fearlessly. Would I have the same job, live in the same house and spend my energy the same way? Essentially my fears are the boundaries or edges of my life. Sometimes I’m not even close enough to the edge to know what my fears are. I’m committed to living my life at the edge, co I can confront my fears and extend my limits. 3 thoughts about pushing out the edges.

1. Courage will extend my boundaries beyond my imagination.
2. Courage and action guard me from spiritual and emotional death.
3. Courage  in my life are intertwined with my relationship with God.
